The History of Australian Exploration from 1788 to 1888 edition by Ernest Favenc Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
If you've read 'The Explorers' by Flannery, you've pretty much read a readers digest condensed version of this. Favenc followed different explorers of different eras through different regions of Australia. His contemporary perspective was interesting as well, much more 'enlightened' than I would have imagined. If you're interested in Australian history, or exploration and adventure in general I'd recommend it.
It is an excellent history, well written and although it is over 100 years old it is written in modern language and very easy to follow.
I \am still going through this but suggest getting an Australian map for those who are unfamiliar with the country.
It certainly provided me with a lot of information I was not aware of about that century of exploration. Its hard to image the spirit of the often very basically equipped expeditions heading out into the unknown with all sort of hopes and imaginations about the interior of Australia only to have most of them dashed after weeks of wandering in the bush and desert. The country was so different to anything they had previously known. There were some amazing leaders but lets not forget the aborigines - some helped and some hindered the explorers on many of the treks..
Enjoyed this book.
A lot of local history events etc , made it interesting to relate to areas and events.
Names places and personalities were familiar or stories we have heard about from school or past books etc.
Would be a good one for our schools to adopt.
